Porsche 997 911 GT2: Sex with an Engine!
As if the 997 Porsche 911 Carrera S wasn’t enough for the world, Porsche has released the long awaited 997 GT2. The car is already going on sale in certain countries and God I can’t wait until it gets here to the U.S. For a while Porsche files had to cope with the 911 Turbo, and then there was the GT3 and GT3RS for the real racing lovers. What a tough group of automotive perfection to have to beat. The GT2 does just that with rear wheel drive under the giant twin-turbocharged 3.6 liter flat 6. The most incredible part of the car is how much power it generates from such an engine, 530hp and 505lb-ft of torque. How in the hell did they do that?
The new GT2 generates so much power and along with its beyond belief aerodynamics the beast will pull all the way to 204mph according to Porsche, helping to make it only the second road legal factory built Porsche to do 200+mph, the first being the Porsche 911 GT1. With a curb weight of just less than 3,200 pounds this car will hit 60 in well under 4 seconds and ever crazier will hit 100 in 7.4 seconds, also according Porscheusa.com. When you go to the website for the GT2 the caption states “Respect required” only. So um ya, that is already insane.
The 997 GT2 passes the track tests with flying colors and nailed an official lap time on the German Nürburgring of 7:31. What?! That is barely slower than the Carrera GT from a few years back which had more horsepower and was built to compete with the Ferrari Enzo. For those of you who don’t know what the Nürburgring is, it is quite possibly the most difficult race track in the world and was nicknamed “The Green Hell” by Formula 1 great Jackie Stewart. The “Ring” as most enthusiasts know it, is over 17 miles long and holds well over 100 turns. It is the pinnacle of testing for any vehicle. If a car can survive a lap on the ring it can survive pretty much anything else.
The GT2 is to go on sale in America for a little under $200,000 and is meant to compete with the Ferrari F430 Scuderia, another amazing automobile. Once again Porsche has shown the world that they can make exotics that will outshine almost anything else and that continue to defie every law that says a rear engined, rear wheel drive car won’t work or handle well. All of this amazing ability and the car still only has a 6-cylinder engine that somehow produces over 500hp and more than 500lb-ft of torque.
If you haven’t seen the Porsche 997 911 GT2 I recommend that you take a look. The car is stunning in every way shape and form. Once again Porsche built a super car that is capable of many things that most super cars couldn’t even dream of. The car inspires lust and greed with just its looks. And once you hear the engine and exhaust note it will make you want to jump in and take it around every track and drive until either you or the car dies. I personally think you will come first though once you unleash the wonderful culmination of power, ergonomics and sheer pleasure. How will Porsche trump this one? What will they think of next?
